And yeah, I know it's pretty easy to be anti-prom, and this entire post is probably going to be one big cliche, but my advice for all prom-goers: get a vintage dress! Ebay is overflowing with them. Just type in the decade you'd like and "prom dress" and you should get at least a couple choices. It's a lot cheaper (and cooler) than getting some glittery, Barbie-like piece of crap that you'll cringe at a few years later.
I usually hate catagorizing things by body type, but since you asked - thinner, less curvy girls will probably look much better in dresses from the 40s, 60s, and 70s (pictured below).
While curvier girls are much better equipped to fill out the hourglass dresses of the 50s (which make up the majority of available dresses):
Can you guess what decade I'm planning to wear?

80s prom dresses are the shit! I think my mom actually has a black and white one lurking around upstairs... I'll take a picture if I can find it.
So that's basically my prom dress advice! And one more thing: please, dear jesus, don't lose your virginity on prom night. I don't care if you do it two years before, one month later, wait until marriage, whatever - just don't let that night be even more of a dumb cliche than it already is. Have fun..
The title of the post is from this (possibly offensive) Family Guy clip, I love that show. Don't look if you don't have a sense of humor: http://www.milkandcookies.com/link/58672/detail

hahha sweet video! family guy is my life.
AH i love the 80's dresses.....Im so sad, sectionals are the same day as prom.....well they are all weekend, but i guarantee they will be same time as prom. UGHHHH, at least its only junior prom, i still have senior prom....but if i do get lucky and I can go to prom, dont worry, i wont lose my virginity.....that night.
Great post, as always, Stephanie. Omg, you made me panic for a minute though - my prom is also nearing and I still haven't even thought of a look. Well, I have, but I don't know where I could find a good tailor to sew a dress for me if I design it.
I also hate the stereotypes of a "beautiful gown" that so many girls choose for their prom. The funniest part is when a girl goes to a wedding salon (or something of the type) to order a dress for her prom night - trust me, it happens scarily often) Recently I viewed my cousin's prom pictures and like every girl in her class was wearing this disgusting wedding-type princess dress in either baby blue or pale pink. I mean, girls, come on! How CAN you do that to your graduation ball outfit? :)
prom is so overrated.
ugh and i never got to wear a coloured dress cuz at my school everyone had to wear white for tradition. and due to the lack of white dresses that season my friends and i got ours made.
i liked mine tho i had it copied from a designer dress and added ruffles around the slit like this dress i saw in a mag and it had a lovely train.
so anyways my point is u can always have ur dress made! if you really like a designer dress or something but cant find a similar one.
I actually had a lot of fun at my high school prom, because I cajoled my date into going in a group of all my friends and pretty much ditched him to hang out with them all night (oops.)
When I was picking out a dress, my biggest rule was that I wouldn't wear a "Seventeen Prom Issue" dress...you know, like the pictures you picked. Anything sparkly or neon or teenyboppery would not have whipped my cream.
I actually ended up picking a Jessica McClintock dress. Many of hers are actually pretty vintage looking and they are affordable. I wanted a vintage one but I put it off too long and had to buy one in the store at the last minute instead.
even though im not positive i can go to prom, i took your advice and searched on ebay
I found this vintage laura ashley dress and i thought you might like it, perhaps it can replace your other one....its cool if you dont like it, i just came across it and thought of you. So here it is

yes, we skipped prom because we think we are much too cool. and are also anti-social losers. but you've made it seem tolerable.
my grandmother made my dress for me, and it was realllly cute.
as far as contemporary dresses go, i tend to like betsey's over the top dresses for suburban proms!!
Mhmm! I want an 80's prom dress, too!
The 40s dresses are great, but I am kind of in love with the gold 80s prom dress you've shown. Love at first sight!
ha, i agree with the dresses you refuse to wear, my friend zoƫ once said that she didn't want to look like a "bowl of sorbet-coloured tlle." or something along those lines.
funny.
and true.

I was totally anti-prom last year and my friends had an anti-prom party, but I decided that I was going this year. I found an awesome ebay store for vintage dresses that you should check out if you haven't already, it's called The Way We Wore and it's amazing.
I actually bought a 50's dress which was a leap considering I'm skinny and lack any curves whatsoever, but it was adorable and I couldn't resist
Prom can be quite fun. Though really I'll take any excuse to get completely dolled up. And hit on my your friends' dates....haha...hum
haha, the blue one! <3
needs to be de-80-ized, but it's still cute.
i skipped my proms too
but those dresses are awesome
I love Family Guy, that episode was hilarious!
I'm planning to get a vintage prom dress or at least one from an obscure little boutique no one knows about. But I'm just a sophomore like you.
I love what you said about prom dresses! Although I'm not getting a vintage dress for porm (well, next year, I'm a soph too). I'm planning on getting one with a jewel neckline and a bit more "mainstream america 60's"
I'm sure you'll bethe shit at your prom in your 80's dress. My mom has a purple one she got after watching Prince's Purple Rain.
Great post as always. I saw that episode of Family Guy and thought that cpart was hilarious.
Is that last gold one actually for sale anywhere, I don't have a prom or anything to go to but it gave me the heebeejeebies and I want it...
Glad you covered the prom subject so well... I get asked the same questions and I'm rubbish at answering since we don't have prom in the UK...
I'm on the no curves side of life but I adore the 50's dresses with the full skirts so maybe I can pull one off anyway. I've still got 2 years to change my mind though...thanks for the advice! The 80's dresses are bodacious.
I just saw that Family Guy..hilarious!
I wore a long black velvet shift dress which was reduced from £35 to £8. I still have and wear that dress, well worth it! A teacher said I looked like a film star!
I've linked you into one of my posts, by the way, thought you'd like to know. My sister is also looking for a prom dress, but she's going towards the "must be new!" end.
Even in the 80's..we wore vintage 1950's.. man, I wish I could post a picture here as proof!
If you want/ desire a fab new dress amd don't want to shell out full price, I stongly suggest finding the closest Loehmann's and checking out their selections. They have name brand designer dresses up to 70% off plus all the shurgs, shoes, shawls, jewlery, bags, etc to make it all perfect.
And proms are fun for the record...
